About The Guernsey and Jersey Breed

Guernsey Breed

The Guernsey is a breed of cattle used in dairy farming.  It is fawn and white in color.  Most people think milk from one cow would be much like the milk from any other, however different breeds make milk that contains distinct varieties of milk proteins.  Guernsey milk is richer in both proteins and flavor. When you drink Guernsey milk, you get:

          12% more protein        33% more vitamin D

25% more vitamin A       30% more cream
15% more calcium

The unique qualities of Guernsey milk, especially flavor, have always been highly sought due to recognized health benefits.  In fact, the unique golden color of Guernsey milk comes from an unusually high content of beta carotene. The Cancer Foundation of America recently published a study that shows beta carotene, along with vitamins A and C, may reduce the risk of cancer. Also, 96% of Guernsey cows carry the protein Beta Casein A2 in their milk, which may lead to better health in the consumers than the Beta Casein A1 protein in most other milks.

Jersey Breed

Compared to average milk, a glass of Jersey milk has greater nutritional value: 15% to 20% more protein, 15% to 18% more calcium, and 10% to 12% more phosphorous, and also considerably higher levels of an essential vitamin, B12. This nutrient-dense Jersey milk tastes better. The reason is there is more protein, calcium and other non-fat solids in her milk compared to other breeds. Jersey milk is typically 4.8% butterfat and 3.65% protein.  86% of Jersey cows carry the A2 Protein.
